LW Pool Club retains 8-Ball Challenge trophy

The Leisure World Pool Club welcomed Laguna Woods on June 29 for the annual summer contest. After a lunch at noon, the rules were gone over and play began at 1:15. At stake was the trophy Seal Beach won from Laguna Woods last fall.

The game played is always eight ball. Teams were divided into three categories: A, B and C players. There were rounds of singles in each category and alternating rounds of doubles. Each round was six games, because there are six tables. The 10th and final round was nine games, so that the match would be 63 games and would not end in a tie. The team with 32, or more wins, would keep the trophy.

In the final round, Laguna Woods needed to win eight of the last nine games to win the match, but Seal Beach won six games for a final score of 36 games to 27.

There were 20 players on the Seal Beach team, and no one played more than five games. Rusty Aquino had a perfect day for Seal Beach, winning all five of his games. Club President Steve Edrich and Kurt Bourhenne won four games and lost only one. It was a very competitive match with many games going down to the eight ball.

In early November Seal Beach will return to Laguna Woods, who will have another chance to reclaim the trophy.
