SHUFFLEBOARD CLUB

Reflections are a big part of national holidays. After a recent shuffleboard game, some seasoned members met to share their Shuffleboard Club experiences. The length of time they have been members ranges from 8-20 years.

Besides contributing to the club and furthering the love of the shuffleboard sport, they have learned a lot from their participation with the game. Top on their list is the fun of developing new skills. Along the way, in addition to tips on scoring points and techniques for shooting their opponents’ discs out of scoring position, they have enjoyed playing with new people and asking for help when needed. Team members soon realize that practice is important—forget about perfection— and losing gracefully is a skill.

When asked what these masters most liked about playing shuffleboard, all agreed on friendships gained, camaraderie, challenges, competition, ease of learning and the parties.

These honored contributors offer advice for LW residents who might consider getting involved with shuffleboard. The game is suitable for all physical abilities; it is not particularly strenuous and can help an individual focus, leaving the busy world outside for an hour or so. Other advantages include meeting new people, enjoying a bit of friendly competition, and gently moving, often advised by the medical community.

Among these dedicated members, Ellie West, Roger Bennett, Milly Larsen, Anita Giroud, Sal LaScala and Sally Fowler have served and are likely still serving as team captains or club officers.

The best way to get involved with shuffleboard and/or to find a friendly, welcoming community is to attend an open play session.

The regular open play schedule continues Monday and Wednesday mornings from 9-11. For the next three Wednesday evenings, open play will be hosted from 6-8. Two Saturday sessions—July 13 and 20—will be hosted from 10 a.m.-noon.

Any LW resident may attend open play sessions to improve their shuffleboard game or to learn the basics of the game and the ins and outs of the club. Veteran players will be available to coach and partners will be provided. All equipment is provided by the club; the only requirement for attendees is to wear closed-toe shoes.
