The Leisure World Men’s Golf League members played at the 4,000-yard, par 62 David L. Baker Golf Course in Fountain Valley on June 21.

Miracle of Miracles, the sun was out prior to the 7a.m. tee time, which was the first time the golfers played in early morning sun in several months.

This made fairways and greens much drier and consistent. Distance control became simpler, helped by newly trimmed fairways, tee boxes, and weed free greens.

Even with tees set all the way back, scores were very good. Closest to the pin on the 100yard third hole was Jim Goltra and on the 110-yard, par 3 15th hole, it was Chris Lankford. Goltra, Fujio Norihiro and Gene Vesely tied for fewest putts, and Lankford had the only birdie of the round.

A Flight Winners

First place: Goltra, at 9 under 53; second: three-way tie among Gary Stivers, Lankford and Norihiro at 5 under 57; third; three-way tie among Dave LaCascia, Sam Choi and Clay Fischer, at even par 62.

B Flight Winners

First place: Gene Vesely, at 8 under 54; second: Daniel Mahoney, at 2 under 60.

On June 24, eight Leisure World Men’s Golf League members and guest, Seon Kim, competed at the 6,000-yard, par 72 Willowick Golf Course in Santa Ana. The sun was out on the drive to the course and by round’s end, it was well into the upper eighties with brilliant sunshine.

With no water hazards on the course, the golfing challenges are the extreme length of the holes, uncut grass in the rough, and yawning, strategically placed sand traps that all too often catch errant balls.

Fujio Norihiro was closest to the pin on both the 140-yard fourth hole and 140-yard 12th hole.

Gary Stivers and Gene Vesely had fewest putts for the round, and birdies were carded by Dave LaCascia, Clay Fischer, Sam Choi and Norihiro.

A Flight Winners

First place: Dave LaCascia, at 1 under 71; second: Stivers, third; Fischer; fourth: Choi; fifth: Norihiro.

B Flight Winners

First place: Digna Vesely, at 5 under 67; second: Gene Vesely, at 2 under 70; third: Bill Zurn.

The Monday and Friday Golf Leagues play at four local courses, all within 15-20 minutes of Leisure World.

These courses are always quite full, so advance League reservations are required with a sign-up sheet available at each round.

There is a prize pool for each round that players are not obligated to enter.

Rewards are given for low net in each flight, birdies, closest to the pin on two par threes, and for the lowest number of putts in each flight. Holes-in-one and eagles (2 under par), although infrequent, are generously rewarded. If interested in playing, contact Gary Stivers, 714313-3697 or Dave LaCascia, 801-674-5975.
