Celebrate July 4 with . reworks, parades and more
INDEPENDENCE DAY
Today, July 4, people around the country will celebrate Independence Day, commemorating the Declaration of Independence. The historic document was ratified by the Second Continental Congress on July 4, 1776, declaring that the Thirteen Colonies were no longer subject to the monarch of Britain and thus establishing the United States of America.
Long Beach’s annual fireworks show, the Big Bang on the Bay, was cancelled this year. Organizers failed to meet a permit deadline for the event.
Below are places in and around Leisure World to celebrate the federal holiday.
GRF Independence Day Celebration The GRF Recreation Department will host its annual Independence Day event with a classic car show, a Rollin’ Thunder Golf Cart Club parade ( see page 12), a craft club show, and a Roy Orbison tribute band on Thursday, July 4, from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. in Clubhouse 6 and the parking lot.
Food trucks will be on site, including Lucille’s BBQ, Baby’s Burgers, Koffel’s and Scooter’s Sweet Shack.
Roy Orbison tribute artist Mark Barnett performs the best loved and challenging songs of the legendary Orbison, plus the most popular music of the ‘50s and ‘60s with his band The Black & White Knights.
Arts and craft clubs will display and offer for sale their talents inside the clubhouse in the table tennis area, which will be closed for the day along with the Fitness Center.
The GRF Transportation Department will run a continuous shuttle to Clubhouse 6 from 9 a.m.-2 p.m. from Clubhouse 4.
Residents, their families and friends are all welcome to join the fun.

Festive Parade and Fireworks in Huntington Beach In Huntington Beach, people can celebrate July 4 with the city’s annual Surf City Run at 7 and 8 a.m. on Main Street, Huntington Beach.
After the run, a parade and carnival will begin at 10 a.m. The carnival goes until 10 p.m. and fireworks begin at 9 p.m.
All beach viewing is open to the public; limited paid tickets for reserved seating on the pier are avilable at www. hb4thofjuly. org.
Fireworks Show in Redondo Beach
Redondo Beach will hold its annual Foruth of July fireworks show at King Harbor, 208 Yacht Club Way, Redondo Beach.
A dazzling display of fireworks will light up the sky starting at 9 p.m.
Patriotic Celebration Aboard the Queen Mary The Queen Mary will host an patriotic celebration aboard the historic shipliner from 3-10 p.m.
The event will feature a WWII aircraft flyover, patriotic performances, deck games, watermelon eating, dance contests and more on Thursday, July 4. Tickets are $55 for adults, $35 for children, and can be purchased online at https:// queenmary.com/tours/july-4/.
