Shuffl eboard Club prepares for active summer
One of the commitments the GRF Board approved in the summer of 2023 was an ongoing maintenance program for the shuffleboard courts. Mitch Dean, the shuffleboard court maintenance expert from Tucson, Arizona, recently worked on repairing concrete chips from the courts and rebuffed all six courts to help smooth out uneven spots to keep the courts in good summer condition.
The regular June open play schedule continues Monday and Wednesday mornings from 9-11. Because of the exhaust turbines, the courts building is comfortably cool. Attendance ranges from eight to 18 players at open play sessions. When a person misses the 9 start, 9:45 is an optional arrival time to be folded into a three or fourperson game. A major benefit of open play is one gets to play with a variety of people, with a chance to observe and discuss different strategies to improve one’s game.
In addition to the regular open play hours, beginning July 3 there will be a Wednesday evening open play from 6-8. As with the morning sessions, any LW resident is invited to attend to improve his or her game or to learn the basics of the game and the ins and outs of the club. Veteran players will be available to coach and partners will be provided. Equipment is provided by the club but attendees are required to wear closed-toe shoes.
Fifteen club members won prizes at the Joan LaCascia Memorial Tournament on June 15. Prizes ranged from $1 gold coins to painted rocks, and the top players won cash prizes. Top players were: Fred Carpenter, $75, first place, Donna Gorman, $50, second; Ellie West, $25, third; Karen Powell and Harold Morehead $25, fourth and fifth place. All three of the top players scored over 100 points in the course of a one-game/eight frames competition. It was a great event, and the club thanks Dave LaCascia for sponsoring the event.
The final games for the Friday morning spring league were played June 14. Team Carol over-rode Team Sally winning 9 of 12 games. Steve Edrich, Carol Johnson, Patti Nemnich, and Stephanie Reagan were all-game winners for Team Carol.
Team Milly edged out Team Shel winning 7 of 12 games. Sal LaScala was the all-game winner for Team Milly while new member and substitute for Team Shel was the all-game winner for Team Shel.
Regular league play is scheduled to begin Sept. 20.
