LW Men’s Golf League
Seven Leisure World Men’s Golf League members played at the 6,000-yard par-72 Willowick Golf Course in Santa Ana on June 14. The weather was initially misty and cloudy with just a brief appearance of the sun at the end of the round. The fairways were very bumpy and rough with numerous gopher holes interfering with the roll of the ball. Tee boxes were in fair condition, but the greens were fairly well maintained.
Chris Lankford was closest to the pin on both the 140-yard fourth hole and 130-yard 12th hole. Dave LaCascia and Digna Vesely had fewest putts for the round and Lankford had the only birdie.
A flight winners: Gary Stivers, 5 under 67, first place; Lankford, 4 under 68, second; Sam Choi, 2 under 70, third; LaCascia, even par 72, fourth; Fujio Norihiro, fifth.
B flight winners: Digna Vesely and Gene Vesely, first place.
Eight league members played at the 5,800-yard par-71 River View Golf Course in Santa Ana on June 17. Golfers competed early on a partly cloudy morning which saw the sun come out in full force before the sixth hole. This made fairways and greens much drier and consistent, which had not been the case for the last several months. Club selection became much easier and with well-manicured fairways and tee boxes, plus weed free greens the scores were low. Closest to the pin on the 150-yard second hole was Sam Choi and on the 100-yard par-3 ninth hole was Larry Hillhouse. Hillhouse also had fewest putts, while Gary Stivers and Jim Goltra had birdies.
Winners: Hillhouse, 8 under 63, first place; Dave LaCascia, 5 under 66, second; Chris Lankford, 4 under 67, third; Tom Ross, 3 under 69, fourth; Choi, 2 under 70, fifth; Gary Stivers, Goltra and Fujio Norihiro, even par 71, sixth.
The Monday and Friday golf leagues play at four local courses, all within 15-20 minutes of Leisure World. Advance league reservations are required with a sign-up sheet available at each round.
There is a prize pool for each round that players are not obligated to enter. Rewards are given for low net in each flight, birdies, closest to the pin on two par threes, and for the lowest number of putts in each flight. Holes-in-one and eagles (two under par) are generously rewarded. Those interested in playing can call Gary Stivers at 714-313-3697 or Dave LaCascia at 801-674-5975.
