Letters to the Editor

Editor:

In reference to the letter (June 20) written by a resident opposed to switching to Circuit shuttles, no mention was made of the 1050% increase in the insurance bill for 2024 and an estimated $118,000 increase in that insurance bill for the current Minibus system. Who has ever heard of insurance costs decreasing? It doesn’t happen.

I was so impressed when I heard that GRF directors and staff were looking for ways to cut increases in our fees. Over $100,000 savings for switching from mini-buses, plus another $20,000 for switching to a new provider for the GRF website.

For those who ask what’s the rush to get this switch through, it’s because the costs will increase if the GRF doesn’t act before the upcoming insurance is due. I say we need to thank and honor those who are responsible for the possibility of saving over $120,000 in assessments.

In regard to the Minibus outsourcing replacement plan and the rescheduling of the town hall meeting to July 19, GRF Fleet Transportation Manager Grant Winford was not present at the first town hall May 28. Instead GRF Director Nick Massetti guided that meeting with a Circuit representative in what appeared to be a foregone conclusion that six-person electric golf cart-type vehicles were the transportation solution for Leisure World residents. For example, Mr. Massetti asked for a show of hands as to how many in attendance had “smart phones.” Nearly everyone present raised their hands. A better question would have been how many could download an app on that phone without assistance from a family member.

Hopefully, with this extension, there will be time to do a more in-depth study of the feasibility of having seniors with various mobility/health issues (many with non-collapsible walkers) negotiating this service. Mr. Winford can present a costeff ective, point-to-point system using vehicles already purchased that are far more comfortable with air and heat, roomier for oversized residents and with rails to hold on to when boarding, not to mention road stability in high winds.
