EMERGENCY PREPAREDNESS

All Leisure World households will soon be equipped with basic emergency kits, courtesy of the American Red Cross (ARC) and Pacific Life Insurance, Orange County.

Pacific Life Insurance donated 6,608 kits to the LW community. Another 2,500 will be donated directly to U.S. military service personnel and their families.

The distribution of kits began June 17 and will continue until all have been distributed.

The kits are simple and meant for recipients to build on and customize to individual needs. The kit contains a 2,400 calorie bar, a pouch of water, a snap light, an emergency blanket, a rain poncho, a whistle, an emergency first aid guide, disposable gloves/ face mask, hand sanitizer, and a personal first aid kit.

All these items are contained in a Red Cross tote bag. These kits were assembled in a parking lot assembly line and not in a factory, therefore the items and quantity of items may vary. There is no way of replacing damaged or defective items in these kits.

The GRF thanks the Red Cross for its support and dedication to helping families and communities in need.

It is also important to highlight that these kits are a donation from the Red Cross and that emergency preparedness is an individual responsibility. The GRF and the Mutuals have facilitated the distributions but do not have disaster planning in place for residents. Remember YOYO (you’re on your own); do not expect GRF or Mutuals to come to the rescue during or after a disaster.
