Club members learn how to keep pets safe in a disaster

Susan Keyes, president of the SoCal Animal Response Team (SCART), gave a program at the Emergency Information Council’s (EIC) meeting on June 10.

Keyes describe how SCART educates the public on disaster preparedness for families and pets. SCART also provides assistance with temporary animal sheltering during a disaster.

Keyes stressed the importance of creating an animal disaster preparedness kit. The kit should have two weeks supply of food and water, sturdy bowls, treats and blanket. Also pack current veterinary vaccination records, a recent photograph and ID tags. Keyes also stressed to not leave your pets home alone to fend for themselves and never leave them behind in a carrier or chained up during a disaster. LWers are encouraged to protect their pets by having a disaster plan, an evacuation kit and registering their pets with GRF.
