The LW Art League met on June 11 in Clubhouse 4. The guest demonstration artist was former California State University, Long Beach professor of anthropology and aviation enthusiast Jon Olson, who considers himself a “narrative painter.”

Olson and his wife Natalie are both residents of Leisure World and Lake Arrowhead, where some of Olson’s paintings are exhibited in the Mountain Arts Network Gallery.

Before he began his painting demonstration, Olson made a brief presentation on the stories behind the paintings he brought for display. Of note are his miniature paintings, the smallest of which is his 2-by-2 inch rendition of a 1665 painting of Dutch painter Johannes Vermeer’s “Girl with a Pearl Earring.” Olson also donated his finished demonstration painting as a raffle prize, which was won by Racquel Tal.

At the club’s art competition, James Greer won best of show. John Harper and James Greer won the popular vote awards for their paintings with the theme “flowers” and “water,” respectively.

In the masters category, Carol Levine, won first place; Vicky Mayhew, second; and Alice Sioson, third.

In the intermediate/advanced category, Diane Astier won first place; Judith Serratt, second; and John Robinson, third.

In the 3D/craft category, Racquel Tal won first place; Alice Sioson, second; and Linda Frysinger, third. One new member, Trish Nady, joined at the meeting.

The Art League will meet on July 9, with Carmen Leslie as the guest demonstration artist. Scheduled for July 26 is the Art League’s “Spotlight on the Artist” reception, which will feature the artists of the Thursday morning portrait workshop headed by Carmen Leslie in the art room of Clubhouse 4.
