SHUFFLEBOARD CLUB

The LW Shuffleboard Club has a history of fun traditions, and because of the generosity of club members, has been able to fund a memorial tournament with cash prizes for more than 15 years. Since 2022, longtime member Dave LaCascia has provided money for cash prizes for the Joan LaCascia Memorial Tournament, in honor of his mom who so enjoyed the Leisure World shuffleboard courts.

This year’s event will be held on Saturday, June 15, at 3 p.m. to accommodate members who still work. There is still room for members to join in. Cash prizes will be awarded to the people who score one of the top five scores, and there will be gifts for the next five top scores. There will also be two consolation prizes for the low scores. Refreshments will be supplied by the club’s new board of directors.

Any club member can play in this fun event by signing up at the courts. Basic shuffleboard rules are followed except for the unique aspect that players are randomly assigned to court positions, giving players a chance to meet and play with a different person than their usual competitors. Another unique part is players avoid knocking the other person’s discs out of a scoring opportunity, resulting in higher scores than usual.

Open play is in full swing with an average attendance of 15. With the open play schedule, the courts building behind Clubhouse 1 is unlocked and a shuffleboard member serves as host. The regular schedule for June includes Monday and Wednesday mornings from 9-11. The only requirement is to wear closed-toe shoes. The club provides all other equipment plus assistance to those who have never played shuffleboard. Everyone is welcome. For more information, call or text Patty Peterson at 562-714-7072.
