LW Men’s Golf League
Five Leisure World Men’s Golf League members played at the 6,000-yard par-71 Willowick Golf Course in Santa Ana on May 17. The weather was overcast and low 60s and the course was damp. The greens have recovered nicely from the previous month’s aeration, but the fairways are still in poor condition.
With just average course conditions and the typical gray May weather, only one golfer— Daniel Mahoney—achieved a net score below par. Fujio Norihiro was closest to the pin on the 140-yard par-3 12th hole, and the challenging 150-yard par-3 fourth hole once again thwarted the players, and no one landed on the green in one. Norihiro and Jim Goltra tied for the fewest putts in the A flight, while Bill McKusky had fewest putts in the B. Goltra had the only birdie of the round.
A flight winners (handicaps
of 0-19): Norihiro, first place; Goltra, second; Sam Choi, third.
B flight winners (handicaps over 19): Mahoney, 3 under 68, first place; Bill McKusky, second.
Eight league members competed at the 5,800-yard par-71 River View Golf Course in Santa Ana on May 17.
With good, but damp course conditions and no wind, seven of the eight golfers scored at or under par. Dave LaCascia was closest to the pin on the 140-yard par-3 second hole, and Jim Goltra was closest on the 100-yard par-3 ninth hole. Fujio Norihiro had the fewest putts in the A flight, while Tom Ross had fewest putts in the B. Goltra had three birdies, while Chris Lankford and Sam Choi had one birdie each.
A flight winners (handicaps of 0-19): Goltra, 6 under 65, first place; Norihiro, 5 under 67, second; Lankford, 4 under 67, third; LaCascia and Choi, 2 under 69, fourth.
B flight winners (handicaps over 19): Bill Zurn, 4 under 67, first place; Larry Hillhouse, 1 under 70, second; Tom Ross, third.
The Monday and Friday golf leagues play at four local courses, all within 15-20 minutes of Leisure World. These courses are always quite full, so advance league reservations are required with a sign-up sheet available at each round.
There is a prize pool for each round that players are not obligated to enter. Rewards are given for low net in each flight, birdies, closest to the pin on two par threes, and for the lowest number of putts in each flight. Holes-in-one and eagles (2 under par), although infrequent, are generously rewarded. Those interested in playing can contact Gary Stivers at 714-313-3697 or Dave LaCascia at 801-674-5975.
