Letters to the Editor

Editor:

As a lifetime member of Sierra Club for over four decades, I’ve been around wild coyote packs with 10-20 members. Not once was I ever threatened or felt endangered by the presence of coyotes. There appears to be unfounded paranoia and emotional fear of coyotes in Leisure World.

As an environmentalist and atheist, I accept coyotes as a natural part of our community and believe they should be left alone.

They have been placed here by Mother Nature and naturally fit into our ecosystem. Coyotes are predators of small rodents such as rabbits, mice, rats, etc.

Yes they will pursue small cats, dogs, and even young children if left alone.

There is strong evidence that the reason coyotes are becoming bolder in their behavior toward humans is because people are feeding them.

Mutual 1 recently sent a notice to all members declaring a mouse problem.

Surprise! We remove the coyotes that are eating the mice and suddenly we have mouse over populaby tion. Who could ever see that coming?

LW Weekly stated coyotes were being captured in traps. I assumed that the trapped coyotes were being relocated, but I’ve been told that the captured coyotes are being killed.

Hopefully, this is not true because if it’s true then, according to Donald Trump, the LW Weekly is giving us fake news through the sin of omission. The editors knowingly withheld important and valuable information from its readers.

Leave the coyotes alone! Rodney Schaerer Mutual 1 Editor’s Note: In the last year, a few traps were set for coyotes on Trust property, but none were trapped. Trapped coyotes are not relocated. They are euthanized. Trapping has since been discontinued as it proved futile.

Editor:

Regarding my letter to the editor (May 16), I want to thank you for the response I received.

I have a much clearer understanding of the article I read in the April 25 edition about a proposal by the GRF in trying to save $250K toward our budget. It sounds like a great idea.

My only concern now is the hope that these new employees will be taught more than how to “work” the system to keep the lines moving.

Hopefully, they will be an important part of identifying the problems and passing them onto the people who can make the appropriate changes.

I have been working with Proptia since our gate system was implemented and have had experienced one problem after another and continue to do so to this day.

I know it’s been reported that there are 2,000 residents that have registered but I would be interested in knowing how many are actually engaged in the use of the system.

I want to feel confident in the information that Proptia provides to Security for our safety but I don’t feel that way.
