Humanist Association
The Leisure World Humanist Association will meet on Sunday, June 2, at Clubhouse 3, Room 1, at 10:30 a.m. The association’s speaker is fellow member, Robert Richert.
Richert is an award-winning writer, artist, and public speaker. During the meeting, the association will screen his appearance on the nationally syndicated, half-hour long TV show, “Freethought Matters,” produced by the Freedom from Religion Foundation. The program features some of Richert’s art, his latest book, “Apple Pie Atheist,” and he discussed his service as an atheist in a foxhole in Vietnam.
Richert wrote “Apple Pie Atheist” to help dispel the many negative myths that people believe about atheists.
Both of Robert’s parents became non-believers during their teens, and raised him, his older sister and younger brother without religious beliefs and practices—but, with time-tested American values. Richert likens his upbringing to that of 1950s family TV shows like “Father Knows Best,” “Ozzie and Harriet” and “Leave it to Beaver.” Raised in a stable middle class family, he went on to lead a happy, fulfilling life.
After the video presentation, Richert will discuss his book, “Apple Pie Atheist.” Copies will be available for signing. There will be a time for questions following Richert’s talk.
