Men’s Golf League

Thirteen golfers from the Leisure World Men’s Golf League played Nov. 3 at the 6,000-yard par-70 Willowick Golf Course in Santa Ana.

Accordingly, with barely average playing conditions, only five of the 13 players were at net par or under and there were just three birdies—two by Chris Lankford, and one by Clay Fischer. Sam Choi had fewest putts in the “A” flight, and Gene Vesely for the “B”. Lankford was also closest to the pin on the 140-yard 12th hole.

Fifteen golfers plus guest Linda Herman challenged the Riverview Golf Course in Santa Ana on Nov. 6.

The difficult playing conditions allowed only six of the 16 rounds to be net at or under par and slowed play way down. There were just six birdies—two by Bill McKusky and Sam Choi, and one each by Clay Fischer and Jim Goltra. Gary Stivers and Choi had fewest putts in the “A” flight, and Bob Munn in the “B”. Jim Goltra was closest to the pin on the 140-yard second hole, John Meyer on the 100 yard all over water ninth, and a special closest was won by Chris Lankford on the very difficult 140-yard 14th.

A flight winners (handicaps 0–19): tie between Choi and Dave LaCascia, 2 under 68, first place; Fischer, even par 70, second; Jim Goltra, 1 over 71, third; tie between Lankford and Larry Hillhouse, fourth; Stivers, fifth.

B flight winners (handicaps 20 and over): tie between Tom Ross and Bill McKusky, 3 under 67, first place; Ron Jackson, 1 under 69, second; Gene Vesely, even par 70, third; Meyer, 1 over 71, fourth; tie between Lowell Goltra, Bill Zurn, and Bob Munn, fifth.

The Monday and Friday golf leagues play at four local courses, all within 15-20 minutes of Leisure World. The courses the group plays are always quite full, so advance league reservations are required with a sign-up sheet available at each round.

There is a prize pool for each round that players are not obligated to enter. Rewards are given for low net in each flight, birdies, closest to the pin on two par threes, and for the lowest number of putts in each flight. Holes-in-one and eagles (two under par), although infrequent, are generously rewarded. Those interested can contact Gary Stivers at 714-313-3697 or Dave LaCascia at 801-674-5975. — Dave LaCascia
