Men’s Golf League
On Sept. 22, 10 golfers competed at the 5,600-yard, par-71 Meadowlark Golf Course in Huntington Beach. This is a medium size course with elevation changes, numerous water hazards, and several turtleback greens. The course favors the straight hitters due to tree lined fairways, long par 3’s and several over 450-plus yard par 5’s.
Scores were higher than usual reflecting the course difficulty with unique placement of tee boxes and flag positioning. There were just four birdies—two by Chris Lankford, and one each by Clay Fischer and Dave LaCascia. Gary Stivers had fewest putts for the ‘A’ flight and Gene Vesely had fewest for the ‘B’. Stivers was also closest to the pin on the par-3 16th hole.
A flight winners: Tie between Fischer and Lankford, 1 under 70, first place; Stivers, second; Jim Goltra, third; Steve Miller, fourth; tie between LaCascia and Fujio Norihiro, fifth.
B flight winners: Vesely, 3 under 67, first place; Bob Munn, second; Lowell Goltra, third.
On Sept. 25, nine golfers competed at the 4,000-yard par-62 David L. Baker Golf Course in Fountain Valley. This course has been in good condition for quite a while. Weather was cool and overcast with no wind.
With the nice playing conditions and receptive greens, scores were low. There were four birdies—one each by Gary Stivers, Jim Goltra, Bob Munn and Ron Jackson. Gary had fewest putts for the ‘A’ flight and Gene Vesely had fewest for the ‘B’. Goltra was closest to the pin on both the par-3 third and 15th holes.
A flight winners: Stivers, first place; Clay Fischer, second; Goltra, third; Sam Choi, fourth.
B flight winners: Tie between Vesely and Munn, first place; Digna Vesely, second; Ron Jackson, third.
The Monday and Friday Golf Leagues play at four local courses, all within 15-20 minutes of Leisure World. The courses the group plays are always quite full, so advance league reservations are required with a sign-up sheet available at each round.
There is a prize pool for each round that players are not obligated to enter. Rewards are given for low net in each flight, birdies, closest to the pin on two par threes, and for the fewest number of putts in each flight. Holes-inone and eagles (two under par), although infrequent, are generously rewarded. Those interested can contact Gary Stivers at 714-313-3697 or Dave LaCascia at 801674-5975. — Dave LaCascia
