Men’s Golf League
Monday Golf
No golf was played due to inclement weather and poor golf course conditions at David L. Baker Golf Club on Jan. 16.
Friday Golf
On Jan. 20, 10 golfers confronted the 5,800-yard, par 70 Riverview Golf Course in Santa Ana. Temps were in the low 40s and the skies were clear, with no wind. But the Santa Ana runs down the middle of Riverview, and during periods of heavy rain the back nine is inaccessible due to the flooding of the riverbed onto the fairways and cart paths.
To allow for an “18” hole course, the club uses only the holes on the east side of the riverbed and reconfigures one hole from a par 5 to a par 3 and a par 4 plus reuses several fairways by adding different tee-boxes when the fairway is used more than once. This allows for different hole lengths which adds variety. As such, par is reduced to 60 and the course is considerably shorter.
Bob Munn and Bill McKusky were closest to the pins on the par 3 second and ninth holes respectivally. Gary Stivers and Gene Vesely had fewest putts for the round and a “special” challenge was to hit the difficult par 3 third green in one. Only McKusky achieved that task. There were birdies by Stivers, Clay Fischer, Chris Lankford, and Munn.
Winners: A Flight: First place: Gary Stivers, a nice one under 59; second: tie between Sam Choi and Fischer, a hard-earned even par 60; third: tie between Fujio Norihiro and Lankford.
B Flight: First place: Munn, at a sensational 10 under 50; second: McKusky, a well-played 5 under 55; third: tie between Gene Vesely and Ron Jackson, a terrific 2 under 58; fourth: Digna Vesely, a sweet 1 over 61.
The Monday and Friday Golf Leagues play at four local courses, all within 15-20 minutes of Leisure World. The courses the group plays are always quite full, so advance league reservations are required with a sign-up sheet available at each round.
There is a prize pool for each round that players are not obligated to enter. Rewards are given for low net in each flight, birdies, closest to the pin on two par threes, and for the lowest number of putts in each flight. Holes-in-one and Eagles (two under par), although infrequent, are generously rewarded. If interested, contact, Gary Stivers, 714-313-3697 or Dave LaCascia, 801-674-5975.
