The Leisure World Humanist Association will meet on Sunday, Feb. 5, at 10:30 a.m., in Clubhouse 3, Room 1. The guest speaker will be Craig Hendricks. Hendricks has a Ph.D in history and taught for many years at Long Beach State. Hendricks is now happily retired and is writing and giving lectures.

Hendricks’ topic will be human rights. What are national rights? Many Americans assume that the Bill of Rights has always protected the civil and legal rights of everyone. The Bill of Rights originally applied to the

Craig Hendricks federal government and its actions. The long, slow process of incorporation gradually brought the rights enumerated in the first 10 amendments to the states through critically important Supreme Court cases. The Humanist Association will look at three such cases: Mapp vs. Ohio, Brown vs. Board of Education and Gideon vs. Wainwright.
