Hula dancers will focus on love in February
HuiOHula, theLWHawaiian dance club, enjoys sharing the love of hula and its culture. All— including men—are welcome. To hula is to tell a story of a lover, a person or a place. Some are about the ancient gods and the island’s rulers.
Latest class subjects are all about the aloha/love such as Aloha Wau Iā Oe meaning “I Love You;” Haleakala (House of the sun) Hula which describes the love for Haleakala, the highest peak on Maui, where different kinds of rain and wind occur; Pua/flower Carnation, about a story of deep love and hopes of a great love returning; and Nani Venuse (Beautiful Venus)—the love and respect for the Planet Venus because it helps the ancient Hawaiians navigate the seas.
Dancers are also preparing other dances such as Blue Hawai’i, made popular by Elvis Presley; “That’s Amore”— love Italian style; and “What a Wonderful World:” a timeless message about the wonders of nature and friendship for the upcoming performances. Not all hula dancers are performancedriven. Having fun dancing together is the purpose and the desire of Hui O Hula and instructor Jojo Weingart.
Lessons are given twice a week starting at 1 p.m.—upstairs in Clubhouse 6 on Tuesday and at Veterans Plaza, or inside Clubhouse 3 in unfavorable weather, on Thursday.
