The Leisure World Men’s Golf Club Tournament was played on Jan. 25. After several cancellations due poor course conditions and rainy weather, it was nice to be back on the course with fellow golfers.

It was a sunny but very cool at the 7:30 a.m. tee time. It warmed up nicely and ended up being a terrific morning to play golf.

It seemed, however, the fairways needed cutting which kept short shots from rolling very much and the greens were initially very damp after overnight watering.

Two groups of three flights of variously skilled golfers play for best net scores (gross score minus handicap), plus two circle holes (shots within a 5-foot radius are rewarded) and two closest to the pin challenges. The Turtle Lake Golf Course is a 1,658-yard, 18 hole, par 54 course that challenges all who play.

Players are asked to repair their ball marks and divots plus one more. Tees are required to be used on the tee boxes.

The greens have deteriorated over the last few months. With the continuing invasion of weeds the surfaces are bumpy and uneven leading to erratic rolls of the ball.

A total of 55 golfers teed off and played 18 holes. There were 55 birdies, 15 circle hole winners and one hole-in-one on the first hole by Dale Williamson.

Additionally, only 13 of 55 golfers were net at or under par including just two at gross under par. A special “low gross” challenge was offered this week and 16 golfers accepted.

SeungLeeandMikeMayfield tied for first with an excellent 2 under gross score of 52; second place was Young Lee with 3 over 57; third was Don Newhall and Tom Owens tied at 4 over 58.

Closest to the pin on the eighth hole was Gene Archambault, and on the 17th hole was Don Newhall. Low net was Seung Lee at a terrific 9 under 45, followed by Dale Williamson at net 47, and 13 others net 54 or below.
