Men’s Golf Club Tournament
The second Leisure World Men’s Golf Club Tournament of August was played on Aug. 24. It was a warm and very humid morning that dramatically affected both putting and tee box club selection. No shot seemed to go far enough, and the first group of players were constantly trying to figure out the right club for the distance or how hard to putt. Interestingly enough, the top scorer in each group played in the late groups, but overall best scores in the three groups were split 50/50 with no apparent advantage to the late starters.
Two groups of three flights of variously skilled golfers vied for best net scores (gross score minus handicap), plus two circle holes (shots within a 5-foot radius are rewarded) and two closest to the pin challenges. The Turtle Lake Golf Course is a 1658-yard 18-hole par 54 course that has challenges for all who play.
A total of 63 golfers teed off and played 18 holes. The greens are still not in great shape with considerable encroachment of weeds. The tee boxes are more like sand traps than green grass due to the lack of the correct divot fix material and proper maintenance. Fairways, however, continue to be well maintained.
Without good playing conditions, only 25 of the golfers were net at or under par, with 13 circle holes but an astonishing 68 birdies. Closest to the pin on the sixth hole was Andrew Kim, and on the 15th hole was Glen Barry. The lowest gross score was Mike Mayfield at 1 under 53. Low net was Bill Smith at 7 under 45.
Golfers are responsible for their tee box divots and ball marks on the greens. Players should repair theirs plus one more.
All scores are net (gross minus handicap):
