Meetings for the Atherton Ward are held at 6500 E. Atherton St., Long Beach. Sacrament service is held every Sunday at 9 a.m. This is followed in the second hour by Sunday School on the first and third Sundays; Relief Society and Elders Quorum meetings are on the second and fourth Sundays. The course of study is the Old Testament; personal reading should be those chapters in 2 Kings not covered in the study. The reading for the week of July 11 covers 2 Kings 17–25. Despite the prophet Elisha’s impressive ministry, the spirituality of the Northern Kingdom of Israel kept declining. Wicked kings promoted idolatry, and war and apostasy abounded. Finally, the Assyrian Empire conquered and scattered the ten tribes of Israel.
The Southern Kingdom of Judah wasn’t doing any better. Idolatry was widespread. Scriptural accounts mention two righteous kings: Hezekiah and Josiah. What stands out with these two kings is the power of faith.”
2 Kings 18:22 says to “trust in the Lord our God.” The “Come, Follow Me,” handbook asks believers to think about how the power of faith can impact them.
