Golf League Results

On March 25, 15 men, including two guests, of the Leisure World Golf League challenged a very wet Willowick Golf Course in Santa Ana. Willowick is not only long, but also demanding, with difficult pin placements and subtly placed sand traps, but no water hazards. Dense fog was with the group until the seventh hole, and then just damp conditions were the issue, resulting in only four scores being at or below par, though there were six birdies.

All scores are net (gross minus handicap). The handicaps for A Flight are 0-19, and for B Flight, it’s over 19.

A Flight: First place: tie between Jim Goltra and Dave LaCascia, a hard-fought 3 under 67; second: Tim Looney, a well-played 2 under 68, plus a birdie; third: Sam Choi, a nice even par 70; fourth: Chris Lankford, 1 over 71, plus a birdie and closest to the pin on the 140-yard 12th hole; fifth: tie between Bill McKusky and Fujio Norihiro. Norihiro had two birdies, while Goltra and McKusky each had one. Goltra also had the fewest putts.

B Flight: First place: Gene Vesely, 4 over 74; second: Ron Sommer, plus a birdie; third: Tom Ross; fourth: tie between Lowell Goltra, Bob Munn and Mike Looney. Munn had fewest putts, while Looney was closest to the pin on the 140-yard fourth hole.

The golfers on March 28 were faced with imminent heavy rain, but four men teed off at 7 a.m. despite league play being canceled. The weather was cold and wet, but the men completed a round.

The Golf League plays at four local courses, all within 15-20 minutes of Leisure World. The courses are always quite full, so advance reservations are available via a sign-up sheet at each round.

Players are not obligated to enter the prize pool for each round. Rewards are given for low net and fewest putts in each flight, birdies and closestto- the-pin challenges on two par-3 holes. Holes-in-one and eagles (2 under par), although infrequent, are generously rewarded. Anyone interested can contact Gary Stivers at (714) 313-3697 or Dave LaCascia at (801) 674-5975.
