The Message
It is the time of the year when Christians around the world celebrate the virgin birth of Jesus the Messiah. The Old Testament prophets prophesied his birth centuries before it occurred. It’s amazing how accurate those prophesies were and something only God could pull off.
The Gospel writers give a wealth of information about the events leading up to his birth, and his life and ministry that followed.
Luke 2:6-7 talks about his birth in a manger because there was no room at the inn. Then in verses 8-11 describes a visit from an angel of the Lord, heralding his birth: “Now there were in the same country shepherds living out in the fields, keeping watch over their flocks by night. And behold an angel of the Lord stood before them, and the glory of the Lord shone all around them, and they were greatly afraid. Then the angel said to them, ‘Do not be afraid, for behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy which will be to all people. For there is born to you this day in the city of David a savior, who is Christ the Lord.’” This savior is identified as Jesus the Christ. The meaning of that word savior is deliverer. Matthew 1:21 explains with “And she will bring forth a son, and you shall call his name Jesus, (savior) for he will save his people from their sins.”
May everyone endeavor to celebrate the true meaning and spirit of Christmas.
