Republican Club

Congresswoman Michelle Steel spoke at the Senior Resources Fair on Oct. 22, the biggest club event of the year, attracting approximately 175 people.

The fair featured representatives from federal agencies, Cal Optima, the SB police and others dealing with problems faced by seniors. Tables were placed along the walls so that residents could get specific information and ask questions of the experts present.

John Harper, the founding president of the club, served as emcee, introducing the congresswoman and the other speakers.

The police department representative discussed identity theft and other scams that specifically target the elderly.

••• At the October board meeting, members discussed the problem of the increasing level of hostility between the two political parties. Everyone at the meeting agreed that the club cannot and will not compromise on its values. These values include the following:

• God and the Bible

• Putting America first in international relations policy

• Smaller government

• A balanced budget and tax reform

• School choice for parents

• Free enterprise

• Pro-life

• Secure borders

• Legal immigration

• Proposition 13.

Club members also discussed how to present Republican values in a way that is less offensive to moderate voters of both parties, especially to independents who support neither party, as well as those who are so turned off by the political system they are not even registered to vote.

One member brought up the old saying “You attract more flies with honey than vinegar.”

Other members agreed the club needs to find ways of presenting the Republican message in a way that is polite, kind, gentle and nice.

Club members said they hope this will help reduce political tensions in the LW community as well as attract more voters to the GOP and to the club.
