This week’s Third Triennial Cycle reading is “Noach” (Genesis 11:1-11:32–Maftir is Genesis 11:29-32). Following the great flood that destroys all life from the Earth except for the descendants of Noach, the people of Earth once again stray from morality and attempt to build a tower to reach heaven and challenge HaShem. In building the tower, the people care more about the building of the tower than about their fellow human beings. They weep if a beautiful brick is smashed but show no sorrow if a person falls to his death. HaShem does not destroy them as before, but removes their ability to speak the same language, and they are unable to understand one another and the tower is destroyed. Generations pass, and Father Abraham is born.
All Beit HaLev services use special prayerbooks, “Lev L’Lev,” which were adapted and abridged for Beit HaLev’s online services from the Reform Siddur, “Mishkan HaT’filah.” Printed versions of the prayerbooks will be available at the in-person Shabbat services.
Beit HaLev is a Jewish Universalist community. It is progressive in thought and traditional in liturgy. The services are joyous, meaningful and musical. Beit HaLev welcomes everyone who seeks a path to the divine and does not believe in labels.
