Hope sees the way for opposing views
COMMUNITY CHURCH
By Johan Dodge
Reverend
There was a joke running around the last two weeks: “bring up politics at Thanksgiving to reduce your Christmas shopping.” First, I hope we all stayed safely distanced over Thanksgiving, as difficult as that might have been. But perhaps more important, that we are able to find peace amid the divergent viewpoints within our families.
This week, we are looking at the beginning of Mark’s gospel as he announced the ministry of John the Baptist. John came from the wilderness, the equivalent of left field, to offer a new way forward. The ministry of Jesus culminated in that new way forward as the Kingdom of God on earth. The world wasn’t ready for the new way of Jesus. As we get closer to Christmas Eve, we are reminded that the world didn’t even have room for Jesus, and yet Jesus came into our midst anyway. God’s love is like that– loving us even when we struggle to love ourselves.
To hear this teaching and worship music, tune in to the service on Sunday morning at 9:50 on Facebook live, @communitychurchleisureworld.
Those who want to join the virtual fellowship will need to call the church office or email leisurewccsue@yahoo.com. Those who don’t have a computer or Facebook, can still call (562) 431-2503 and listen to the weekly message beginning Sunday evening.
Community Church intends to hold a Christmas Eve worship at 2 and 4 p.m. The services will be distanced and outdoors with heaters, now accepting reservations to attend.
Community Church offers Communion the first Sunday the month at 1 p.m. in front of the church. The elements are pre-sealed for safety, and the liturgy is part of the morning worship on Facebook. Those who receive Communion must wear a mask and maintain distance. The Communion table is an open table; all who want to receive may come and participate. You do not need to be a member of the church; all are welcome here. If you are in need without another way to address it, you may call the church office to leave me a message at (562) 431-2503.
