The Torah reading this week is from “Vayishlach” (And [Jacob] sent . . . ), Genesis 34:1-35:15. In the Second Triennial Cycle, we will study the dramatic account of Jacob’s only daughter, Dinah, who ventures into the city of Shechem, where she is abducted and raped by the prince of the city. Nowhere in the Torah does it speak of Dinah’s experience; the Torah’s account is of Jacob’s sons, Simeon and Levy, who, upon learning that Prince Shechem wants to marry Dinah, devise a plan to avenge their sister: they demand that all the males of the city be circumcised, and King Hamor agrees. Then, on the third day, when the men were in the most severe pain, Simeon and Levy attack the city and kill every man, including the king and his son, and rescue their sister, Dinah.

Rabbi Galit Shirah conducts a weekday Ma’ariv service every Thursday for Sim Shalom, the online synagogue. Sim Shalom presents livestream services Monday-Thursday, with a different rabbi each day. To say Kaddish, pray for healing and to hear a spiritual message, visit SimShalom.com.

Hebrew classes are starting. Conversational or Prayerbook Hebrew classes will begin the first week of December. A class in Pirke Avot (Ethics of the Fathers) will begin then as well. For information, contact the Rabbi at (562) 715-0888 or duets@icloud.com.
