Men’s Golf League Results

The Men’s Monday Golf League gathered on Oct. 19 at the Willowick Golf Course in Santa Ana. Seven men were tested by the par-71, 6,000-yard, 18-hole course. With no water hazards, long fairways and a generally flat course, good scores should abound. But the greens had been recently punched (aerated) and sanded, making them uneven and inconsistent at best. As the morning started out cool and humid, club choice was particularly essential because the dampness shortened drives and approach shots. No one had a birdie, and scores were generally over par. Since the back nine was just beginning the same processes as the front, the front nine was played twice.

All scores are net (actual score minus handicap). A Flight handicaps range from 0-20, and B flight higher than 20.

A Flight Winners: First place: Bill McKusky, even par 71, plus tie for fewest putts; second: Dave LaCascia, tie for fewest putts, plus closest to the pin on the 150-yard, par-3 fourth hole; third: Gene Vesely; fourth: Fujio Norihiro, plus closest to the pin on the 140yard, par-3 seventh hole.

B Flight Winners: First place: Bob Munn, 2 over 72, plus fewest putts; second: Tom Ross; third: Bill Zurn.

Seven members of the Men’s Friday Golf League played at Meadowlark Golf Course in Huntington Beach on Oct. 23. They teed off into an overcast, cool morning on the scenic, par-70, 5,600-yard course. The sun never did not come out, but the breeze was refreshing. All the greens here had also been recently punched and sanded; although the fairways were in good shape, the conditions created difficult putting. Even so, there were three rounds under par and two birdies.

A Flight Winners: First place: tie between Sam Choi and Dave LaCascia, 1 under 69; second: Gene Vesely, 1 over 71; third: Fujio Norihiro; fourth: Bill McKusky. LaCascia and Choi each had a birdie. LaCascia was closest to the pin on the 150-yard, par-3 16th hole, and McKusky was closest on the 140-yard, par-3 seventh hole. Choi had fewest putts.

B Flight Winners: First place: John Petersen, 1 under 69; second: Bob Munn, 3 over 73, plus fewest putts.

Both the Monday and Friday Golf Leagues play at four local courses, all within 15 minutes of Leisure World, starting between 7-7:30 a.m., except holidays. The courses are David L. Baker in Fountain Valley, Meadowlark in Huntington Beach, Riverview in Santa Ana, and Willowick in Santa Ana. LW Men’s Club membership is not required, and friends, ladies, spouses and family are all welcome to play and/or join.
